Description

Such an odd title, I wonder where it came from :?

Well here it is....The big project! This is for Alkuna on Subeta.
To enter in special contest ([link]).
Objective: Draw a full body, colored picture of Alkuna's lovely Nelania, a Reborn Jollin in a piping hot pose!

Let's see... Where to start...
Ah yes... This was inspired by Clover Studio and Capcom's Okami (Hahah their wolf.....*shot*) As you /should/ be able to tell from at least the style of the flames. I listened mainly to the tracks #4 Prologue, #21 A Monster's Presence and finally #29 Geisha Spider's Extermination of the Okami OST while sketching this.
Halfway through the sketch I noticed such an open space in the center, I debating putting everything from an orb to Earth (for shits and giggles) in the middle. Until I saw little Aerli, the Folikit, also known as Nelania's minion. So I ended up putting her in there as well. (I also wanted to kiss ass a little by adding her to be honest).

MOVING ON.
While photoshopping it I ran into quite a few hitches.

The first one: Inking
Me, being well me, I really wanted to add an Okami touch to the lines. And my progressing stupidity led me to believe that there was a special style in which the lines were created and professing further I led myself to believe that there was a tutorial out there on how to make that kind of style, SPECIFICALLY. Which took up a good... 3 WEEKS to realize 'MOVE ON WITH IT!' and I finally found these: [link] lovely brushes. After that. It really took off. (I fell in love with the second one down on the left column of previews of the brushes) And the warp tool became my best friend. There isn't a single line in this picture that I HAVEN'T adjusted the line size at least 7 different times. Yeah. I know.

Second hitch: Coloring.
Once again, my original intentions were to color it with an Okami-esk touch. Once again. I wasted time studying every scrap of art, including fanart, of Okami to find some kind of secret to the coloring. I have recolored this picture a total of 6 times trying to find the right mood. Finally I came to the realization that I needed to move on and it ended up with the bold colors it has now. AND the tail actually received it's 'shading' during this process in a sad attempt to make it look like fire. I REALLY love the product produced by it though.

Third hitch: Shading
(I swear with each big step in making a picture, this one has found a problem) Guess what? I wanted to give it Okami-esk shading. Guess what else? I never figured out either. I gave up much faster, especially with the help of :iconailoncha: and her analysis of the shading and KIND of shading, which turned out to be what's called 'Sharp cell-shading'. So I quickly switched to that kind of shading (I don't know if I ENDED with sharp cell-shading though).
I decided for the light source to be Nelania's beautiful tail and so I based the shading off of that and I even added kind of a glow to the actual fur of both foxes.

Fourth hitch: Cell-shading LINES
I was always in constant debate as to whether or not to change the lines from black to a darker color of the fur. I absolutely ADORE the lines and I didn't want them to be hidden but, if any of you have tried cell shading, I'm sure you know that to get the best product is to change the lines. I pondered over this for a good day or so before I decided to go through with it and change the lines.
I still wish I left them black.
-------------------------------------------------------
Fifth hitch: INTENTIONAL ACCIDENTALS
If some of you critiques have noticed by now. Yes. There are some mistakes to this piece. Such as
-The sharp edges to the color, shading and lighting.
-Aerli's colors are out of the lines.
-The shading isn't full and isn't all one color.
-The main flames have VERY choppy coloring.
-Nothing seems to be blended (in general)
-Some of the lines are still black.
Yes. Those ARE intentional. No. I am not going to fix it. I wanted to give off that kind of feeling. What kind of feeling exactly I'm not entirely sure. Maybe a sharp feeling...?
I don't know but I'm not going to change it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Sixth hitch: BACKGROUND
Don't we all love them. Of course, seeing as it wasn't even sketched with a background why I'd run into this problem. I didn't want to leave it with a transparent background because that always does seem to give off a neon warning sign saying 'LOOK LOOK THIS ARTIST IS LAZY!' so I didn't want to end such a troublesome prodigy unfinished. I decided to kind of take the way out that I did with 'Single File' a tan background, but this time I attempted /with a poor result/ to add kind of a paper-y texture. Hence the background you see now.

After slapping on some finishing touches, tweaking occupancies and suffering harsh self criticism I decided to leave it as it is. I was planning to upload this sooner, so my excitement about it wouldn't wear for the finishing touches, or later so I can see some other entries but running into, not internet problems, but electricity problems I finally decided to upload it now.

And that was the summery of this work of art.

My feelings for it have ultimately died. I was hoping for, well, something else but I am still extremely proud of it. From the sketch it was MUCH different from my usual stuff and it is actually GOOD. (Inle complimenting her own art. We're all gunna die). I have quite a bit of confidence in it for the contest but I know I shouldn't have. Either way. If it wins or looses. I am glad to post such a thing and finally finish a project.

Apologies for the long Artist's Comments.
Enjoy~
-Inle.

Information:

Actual size: 4144x4400
Picture format: JPEG
Size: 11 MB
Time spent (un-including waiting+debating times)
Sketch: 1 hour
Lines: At least 10 hours
Coloring: at least 14 (only 4 in productivity)
Shading+touches: At least 5 hours
Total: 30 (give or take a few hours)

(P.S. the konji in the bottom right is for 'Inferno' which is stamped at the bottom of [link] in the official Okami art book.)

(P.S.S. I have explored the idea that this image shares an uncanny resemblance to not only the Firefox Browser Icon but also [link] however this image wasn't intentionally drawn to bare the resemblance to those or any other pictures a troll may scrounge up. I drew this while my little sister was playing Grand Theft Auto and my Mom was chatting on the phone, and on facebook. So I ASSURE you I did not draw this in the presence of a computer. So I did not steal this, and if your dead set on that conclusion then I did not steal this intentionally )

(P.S.S.S. Oh and for the record, any who intend on stealing this I'd like you to know that this has MANY hidden watermarks in which I remember all of their locations and WILL point out in case of theft and all theft will be reported because I have worked HARD on this and I am NOT going to tolerate any bullshit.
Thank you.)

Constructive criticism is welcomed.

First of all, I love the lining details and color texture on the large tail. The light source is quite an unique and wonderful choice. I would have liked to see more effort and similar detail on the cub's tail. Since the picture illustrates a bond between the two, the cub should give that sense of pride as well. It seems the ears of the adult fox blend into the fur color so the figure of its head is slightly lacking. But I do like the shadowing and coloring on the cub. Amazing work on your previous silhouette. It still leaves that impact and adds a more heated and intense atmosphere.
